Are you planning to string acoustic guitar, but do not know how to do that? Here, we will show you how to string acoustic guitar properly that all beginners should know.
Prepare a set of strings
There are a very wide variety of strings that can be used for your guitar. Let us talk about the most common strings used by guitarists, that is metal strings. Metal strings come with many finish variations, like bronze, phosphor bronze, polymer-coated, silk, and steel strings.
Each of the string has its own characteristic. For example, bronze strings can result in a very bright and clear tone. Unfortunately, this type of string is said to age more quickly than the other types of strings. The phosphor bronze strings are usually darker and warmer than the bronze ones. They last longer than bronze strings and have a crisp sound. Another type of string which has quite high resistance to corrosion is polymer coated strings. Meanwhile, steel and silk strings are known to be the favourite strings of folk guitarist, since they can produce a very delicate tone.
Prepare your guitar
The next step to string acoustic guitar is preparing the guitar itself. You should lay your guitar in a proper position, on a flat surface, for example. The right position will make it easier for you to change the strings. It is also okay if you want to place your guitar on your lap instead of laying it on a table as long as you are comfortable with it.
Remove the old strings
The third step to do is remove the old strings. It is not too hard to remove the strings, since what you have to do is turn the peg to loosen the strings. Keep turning it until the string you want to remove fallen of. It is suggested to start removing from the thickest string first. After that, you can continue to the less thick strings.
After all of the strings fall of the tuning pegs, what you have to do next is removing them from the bridge. For several types of guitars, you should remove the bridge pins, as well. In order to remove the pins, you should pull them using your hand or you can use pliers to remove them.
Start stringing from the lightest string by placing it to the bridge hole. After that, try to carefully pull that string with proper pressure. You have to make sure that the string has been threaded into the right place before finally reinserting the removed pin.
Attach the new strings to the guitar pegs
The last step to string acoustic guitar is attaching the pinned strings to your guitar tuning pegs. First, you have to carefully pull the string to the head of your guitar. Then, you should pull it around the tuning peg one or two times, before inserting it to the tuning peg hole. What you should do next is tightening the strings. Make sure you do not tighten it too much.
