What Is Guitar Jamming Actually?

Guitar jamming is actually improvisation you make with other musicians. You can do the jamming either with individual or group of musician. In the jamming session, you can play parts of rhythm, get a beat, and much more. The jamming you do can be based on particular chord sequence, specific song, or even free–form entirely. Since the jamming session is always done based on the player’s improvisation, you might not have much time to make preparation to play any particular song or piece.

But, you can prepare yourself to make sure that you will be ready whenever you need to do the guitar jamming with other musicians. This means that you have to do a lot of practices in terms of scales and chords in various guitar keys. This is to make sure that you will be able to play either solo or rhythm parts in jamming session. Just keep in mind that to take part in jamming, you actually do not need to be an expert in playing guitar. The only thing you need to do is to grasp the basic of guitar playing.

Skills a Guitarist Should Have for Guitar Jamming

In order to improvise in jamming session, a guitar player should have some skills which include:

1. Strumming Chord

The first skill a guitar player should have for jamming is strumming chords of various keys. In addition, a guitarist should also be able to quickly shift from one chord to another. If you are a beginner, you can have the skill by starting from the primary chords that exist in guitar keys and commonly played by musicians such as key A, C, D, E, F, G, and much more.

2. Play in Time

The next skill you need to have for guitar jamming is being able to play in time. Just keep in mind that you do not need to play complicated rhythm as long as you are not feeling comfortable with that. But you have to make sure that you can keep the beat well. Keep focus on your playing and do not let yourself to be distracted by things outside the jamming.

3. Skill to Hear the Chord Progression

The next thing is that you should be able to hear the progression of chord. You also need to be able to follow along the progression. Just remember that hearing skills are crucial things for successful guitar jamming. You should be able to recognize any change that occurs in the music you are listening to and then identify the particular chords that are being used.
