First of all, make sure that you have been really skillful in strumming chords or change the chords in nature. Well, it means that the beginners should practice this skill at first before going to the next level. Yes, it should already be good in various keys starting from the common to complex ones.

Second, make sure to practice it gradually. It is realized that playing on complex chords is not as easy as it seems, therefore you must start from the easiest one. To improve this skill, listening to bass and drum play might be a good idea to let you stay in-tune.

Third, learn more about the chord progressions, for example by acknowledging when the chord must be changed. If you have mastered this, you may find that some popular songs may have similar patterns from one to another.

Lastly, try to improvise the lead melodies. When you don’t know how to do it, be sure that there is someone as your teacher. Then, the teacher can let you practice by starting from simple songs first.

After being able to play guitar using skills mentioned above, it can be said that you are ready to practice jamming more. Of course, it doesn’t mean that you can just be successful in a short time. There are some steps for great guitar jamming later. What are they?

First, it is not a time to strum more than one beat at the same time. Start from one strum for each beat implementing simple down stroke. Have you been successful in this first try? If yes, let’s move to the next step.

Second, it is still about strumming but try to strum along. You can now try to use up stroke rather than the down stroke.

Third, use both down stroke and up stroke in order to play rhythm which is much more complex. At this level, it is good if you also try to listen and learn on how other fellow musicians play. It is even suggested to play them in quiet place.

Fourth, try to make riffs. It is not bad to start it from the simpler ones. If you have mastered the chord, it can be easier as you also know how to make the variations. Lastly, learn about improvising solo melodies. You may need to listen to and see what the others play and then imitate them. However, it will be better if you can create the improvisation by yourself.

Practice makes perfect. So, make sure to schedule yourself to practice it every day for more fabulous results.
